She wanted a contemporary piece of jewellery that would connect her to her grandmother – the invisible energy that sustains the family.

She had several family heirlooms tucked away, including a lovely brooch with a cameo engraved on a piece of rock. I took this as my aesthetic reference and, after considering various designs, decided to create a clip-on brooch; the piece of rock was removed and I created a brooch where the prongs and the empty space take centre stage.
