Workshops

Welding Technique / Earrings & ring

Intensive weekend jewellery workshop in which you will learn the basic techniques of the ancient craft of jewellery making. You will learn how to cut sheet metal, shape it to your liking, solder earring sticks and make your own ring.

We will work with brass, although the technique is the same for metals with similar properties such as gold, silver, copper and alpaca.

What will you do?

Session 1

I will explain the techniques, safety rules, tools and materials we will use in the workshop. We will see some pieces and images to inspire you and help you understand how we will make them. Each of you will decide on the aesthetics of your pieces using sketches and paper models.

We will transfer the sketches to metal, begin to cut the pieces and feel the material. You will learn how to cut with the saw, perforate sheet metal with the micromotor and shape your ring. We will file and grind the pieces. We will shape and give textures to the surfaces by using different cold techniques using hammers and punches.

Session 2

We will continue to work on our pieces.

I will explain and show you the technique and safety rules of soldering. We will see the fundamental elements involved in this process: jeweller's torch, borax, refractory brick, copper tongs and bleaching salts to pickle the metals. You will learn how to solder the earring stems.

We will give the final finish to the pieces; matt and/or polished. One of the most important phases of the work so that the result is really professional.

We will pick up and tidy up the work table.
