Workshops
Playing with metal / Pendant & Earrings
In this workshop you will acquire the basic knowledge and practical tricks of the jewellery trade by making a pendant and a pair of earrings of your own design.
We will work with brass, although the technique is the same for metals with similar properties such as silver, gold, alpaca and/or copper.
No previous experience is necessary.
What will we do in the workshop?
We will start by looking at some pieces that you can take as a reference or inspiration. I will explain the techniques, tools, safety rules and materials that we will use during the day.
You will draw freehand on paper until you get the final design that we will transfer to the metal plate.
With your design as a guide we will begin to cut the metal using the hacksaw.
I will show you how to use it according to the details of your designs. You will feel the strength of the metal and learn how to control your own strength to make the work smooth and enjoyable.
We will use the handheld micromotor to pierce the metal and be able to cut inside it. At this stage of the process you will be able to play and give a certain volume to the pieces by moving the half-drilled metal or create original perforated surfaces by combining the different sizes of cutters. Once the pendant has been shaped, I will show you how to forge earrings from brass sheet or wire. We will use the pliers to make a hook clasp by cold bending the thread.
We will use the files, files and sandpaper to smooth the profiles and clean the burrs from the metal.
Once cleaned, everyone will be able to experiment on their pieces; texturing by percussion with different hammers and stamping numbers and/or letters with punches on the tas.
Finally, we will learn about the techniques and tools for manual finishing: matt and polished, applying the one you like best.
